Why timing matters
Light affects both immediate alertness and the body clock
Brighter light can increase alertness, which is one reason it may be useful earlier in a night shift. Light also sends timing information to the circadian system. The effect depends on when the light reaches the eyes, how bright it is, how long it lasts, the person’s prior light exposure, and their underlying timing.
Support alertness
Use a brighter safe work area early in the shift or soon after waking. This can mean ordinary brighter workplace lighting or daylight, not necessarily a medical light box.
Do not overmanage every hour
Some parts of the day do not require either maximum brightness or deliberate darkness. Ordinary task and room light can be the practical middle ground.
Prepare for planned sleep
Later in the shift, on the trip home, and during wind-down, reduce avoidable brightness while keeping work and transportation safely visible.
Protect daytime sleep
Blackout curtains, an eye mask, covered LEDs, and a dark route to the bedroom can help keep light from competing with the planned sleep window.

How the plan changes based on what comes next
7 PM to 7 AM with another night afterward
- 7 PM to 1 AM: use a brighter work area when practical.
- 1 AM onward: begin reducing unnecessary bright light while preserving safe task visibility.
- Commute and wind-down: reduce avoidable brightness, but never compromise driving safety.
- 8:30 AM to 4 PM: keep the bedroom dark.
- After 4 PM: seek daylight or a well-lit room soon after waking.
7 PM to 7 AM on the final night
- Start of shift: use brighter light selectively for immediate alertness.
- Middle of shift: ordinary workplace lighting is reasonable.
- Second half: reduce avoidable bright light earlier than you would when maintaining nights.
- Recovery sleep: keep the planned sleep period dark.
- After waking: use daylight or a well-lit environment, then make the later evening progressively dimmer before the nighttime bedtime you are moving toward.
Commute safety comes before light reduction
Some guidance discusses reducing morning light after a night shift, but dark lenses can also increase sleepiness or reduce visibility. Do not use dark glasses, screen filters, or any other strategy in a way that makes driving less safe. If you are severely sleepy, the safer response is transportation, rest, or another fatigue-control measure—not a darker drive home.

Why the planner asks what happens after the shift
A worker maintaining a run of night shifts may benefit from a clearer night-oriented sequence: brighter light in the first half, less light later, dark daytime sleep, and brighter light after waking. Someone finishing their final night may want to avoid reinforcing the night schedule more than necessary and place greater emphasis on light after the recovery sleep.
Another night follows
The planner uses the first half of the shift as the main brighter-light window and the second half as the lower-light window.
Final night for now
The planner shortens the early bright window, uses normal light in the middle, and starts lowering light during the second half.
After recovery sleep
The transition plan emphasizes daylight or a well-lit room after waking, then recommends a progressively dimmer later evening.
Not a complete reset plan
The tool does not choose a new nighttime bedtime, prescribe a shortened recovery sleep, or estimate how many days circadian readjustment will take.
What this planner does not do
The planner does not use your location, season, sunrise, sunset, measured light levels, wearable data, eye-health history, medication list, or individual circadian phase. It does not prescribe a light box, a number of lux, or a clinical treatment schedule. People with significant sleep problems, eye conditions, light-sensitive medications, bipolar disorder, or other relevant health concerns should use individualized guidance.

Light exposure and night-shift sleep questions
When should night-shift workers use brighter light?
A practical starting point for someone working another night is the first half of the shift and a period soon after waking. Brighter light may also help during an acute sleepy period, although immediate safety and the timing of planned sleep still matter.
When should I start reducing light during a night shift?
The planner starts reducing unnecessary bright light during the second half of a typical night shift. This is a broad planning rule rather than a personalized circadian prescription.
Should I wear sunglasses on the drive home?
Not automatically. NIOSH notes concern that dark sunglasses can increase sleepiness and drowsy-driving risk. Never use anything that impairs visibility or makes you less safe behind the wheel. The safest approach may be to use them only when someone else is driving and individualized guidance supports it.
Do screens count as light exposure?
Yes, but screens are only one source. Overhead lights, task lighting, daylight, windows, and the overall brightness of the environment may matter more than one device setting.
Do I need a light therapy lamp?
No. The public planner uses ordinary brighter and dimmer environments. A light box is a more specific intervention with timing, intensity, eye-health, and medical considerations that this tool does not prescribe.
How dark should my bedroom be during the day?
Dark enough that daylight and small light sources are not repeatedly waking you or making the room feel like daytime. Blackout curtains, an eye mask, and covered LEDs can help. Maintain a clear and safe path if you need to get up.
Does bright light guarantee I will stay alert?

How should the plan change after my last night shift?
The final-night mode uses a shorter early bright period, begins lowering light during the second half, protects the recovery sleep, and emphasizes daylight or a well-lit environment after waking. It does not create a complete multi-day transition schedule.
Why does the planner not use sunrise and sunset?
This first version is designed to work without location access or an account. It uses clock times and conditional language such as “when daylight is available.” Seasonal and location-aware recommendations belong in a more advanced adaptive tool.
