Stronger Overnight Workforce. Clear Organizational Impact.

Night shift work creates a fundamental misalignment with biology, daily life, systems, and infrastructure. Research consistently shows worse outcomes across health, wellbeing, performance, retention, safety, and cost. NightOwling helps reduce that impact and improve outcomes for both employees and organizations.

What The Research Shows

A quick look at well established findings on night shifts and nonstandard work hours.

Safety and Error Risk

A systematic review of safety implications found night shift work carries a substantial increased risk of accidents (Wagstaff and Lie, 2011). Safety and productivity may be compromised at night (Folkard and Tucker, 2003), and impaired attention and processing speed in night shift workers (Johnson et al., 2010).

Higher Health Risks

Studies associate night shift work with significantly elevated risk of diabetes (Vetter et al., 2018), cardiovascular disease (Vyas et al., 2012), metabolic disorders (Wang et al., 2014), and certain cancers (IARC Monographs Volume 124, 2020).

Workforce Stability and Turnover

Night shift work is associated with greater turnover intention (Blytt et al., 2022). Research on shift timing and rotation also links night shift schedules with poor job attitudes and absenteeism (Demerouti et al., 2004). Shift work has also been associated with higher sick leave and sickness absence in occupational health reviews (Merkus et al., 2012; Larsen et al., 2023).

Sleep and Cognitive Disruption

98% of night shift workers report sleeping less than the recommended minimum (Devine et al., 2026). Night shift work is associated with poorer sleep quality (Di Muzio et al., 2020) and cognitive impairment affecting attention and memory (Leso et al., 2021). Research summaries link reduced sleep quantity and quality to worse task performance, communication, mental health, and safety outcomes among night-shift workers (Habiburrahman et al., 2021).

Employer Cost Impact

Night shift work drives significant excess employer costs across healthcare claims (McHugh et al., 2020), absenteeism and lost productivity, workplace injuries and workers’ compensation (NSC), and turnover, with costs compounding upwards of $15,000 per shift worker per year (CIRCADIAN).

Unmet Worker Demand

80% of night shift workers struggle with sleep and fatigue at work. 86% want a solution. 96% want their employer to help provide it. (Devine et al., 2026).

The Challenges of Night Shift Work

Night shifts create unique biological, structural, and operational challenges. From circadian disruption to systems, training, and support that weren’t built with overnight teams in mind.

When night-shift employees face sleep disruption, health strain, difficulty maintaining daily life, reduced social connection, and limited access to support, those issues ripple into retention, safety, costs, performance, and overall outcomes.

Challenges you may face include:
  • High turnover and related workforce costs
  • Reduced productivity and performance
  • Increased safety incidents and health risks
  • Difficulty hiring, coaching, and retaining talent
  • Limited availability of HR, support, and key resources during night hours
  • Lack of effective programs or benefits tailored to night-shift employees
  • …and many other operational and workforce challenges tied to night work
Night shift workers operate below the baseline that most systems, infrastructure, and support programs were built around. The impact shapes outcomes across HR, operations, and the organization as a whole. For night shift teams, this isn’t a nice to have. It’s a necessity. NightOwling is corrective, a necessary response to the gap the schedule itself creates.
