How the calculator works
Turn actual caffeine entries into a bedtime overlap estimate
A generic rule such as “stop caffeine six hours before bed” cannot show how a 40 mg tea differs from a 200 mg energy drink or how several servings add together. This calculator uses the amount and timing of each entry to create a more practical one-shift estimate.

Caffeine half-life
What the remaining-caffeine estimate means
Half-life is the time it takes the body to eliminate half of a substance. Caffeine is often described as having an average half-life near five to six hours, but real clearance varies widely. The calculator therefore shows a range rather than pretending to know one exact number for you.
Faster estimate
The lower end uses a four-hour half-life. It represents a faster planning assumption, not a promise that your body clears caffeine this quickly.
Middle estimate
The ranking of your entries uses a six-hour half-life so the tool can show which drink contributes most to the bedtime total.
Slower estimate
The upper end uses an eight-hour half-life. Some people clear caffeine even more slowly because of genetics, pregnancy, medications, health conditions, or other factors.

What a 7 PM to 7 AM caffeine pattern can look like
Consider someone planning to sleep at 8:30 AM after drinking a 12-ounce coffee around 8 PM and a 16-ounce energy drink around 1 AM.

The estimate does not mean everyone will experience the same sleep effect. It shows how much caffeine may still be present under two reasonable clearance assumptions so you can test timing changes more deliberately.

Why the tool gives a window instead of one hard deadline
Caffeine sensitivity is subjective and is not the same as metabolic speed. The setting simply makes the suggested cutoff more or less cautious while leaving the core clearance range unchanged.

What to change first when caffeine overlaps with sleep
Move the largest late entry
The drink contributing most at bedtime is usually the best first target. Moving it earlier, reducing it, or replacing it with a smaller serving may matter more than changing an earlier tea.
Keep sleep timing stable
When testing a cutoff, try not to change your planned sleep time at the same time. A stable comparison makes it easier to notice whether caffeine timing helped.
Use more than one shift
One night can be distorted by workload, stress, light exposure, meals, or accumulated sleep loss. Look for a repeatable pattern across several similar shifts.
What this calculator does not do
This tool does not assess overdose, toxicity, pregnancy limits, medication interactions, heart symptoms, anxiety, or whether you are safe to work or drive. It also cannot know your personal caffeine half-life. If caffeine choices interact with pregnancy, medications, a health condition, or concerning symptoms, use individualized medical guidance rather than this estimate.

Can caffeine six hours before sleep still matter?
Yes. A controlled study found that a large 400 mg dose taken six hours before bedtime still disrupted sleep. The size of the dose matters, so a small tea and a large energy drink should not be treated as equivalent.
Why does the calculator show a range?
No public tool can determine an individual’s exact caffeine metabolism from a few questions. Showing faster and slower clearance assumptions is more honest than presenting one precise number.
Is caffeine sensitivity the same as caffeine metabolism?
No. How strongly you feel caffeine and how quickly your body eliminates it are related only imperfectly. The sensitivity setting changes the suggested cutoff window, not the core half-life calculation.
Should I enter every sip separately?
Not necessarily. Combine continuous sipping into one approximate entry near the middle of the drinking period, or use two entries if the beverage lasted across several hours. The goal is a realistic planning estimate, not perfect tracking.
Are the drink amounts exact?
No. The menu uses common estimates. Coffee shops, brewing methods, teas, energy drinks, supplements, and serving sizes can differ substantially. Edit the milligrams whenever the product label provides a better value.
Does a low estimate guarantee caffeine will not affect my sleep?
No. Some people notice sleep effects at lower remaining amounts, and sleep can also be disrupted by light, stress, meals, noise, temperature, or circadian timing.
